A is for autism (Discourse)

A is for autism (Discourse)
Event on 2017-04-28 19:20:00
An estimated 700,000 people in Britain are affected by autism. Dame Stephanie Shirley will share her hands-on experience of the disorder – providing a virtual reality demonstration of how the world appears to someone on the spectrum; and introducing the robot which teaches at Prior’s Court, her specialist autism school. Discounted tickets are available to Members of the Ri. Find out more about how to join our community. By booking to attend events at the Royal Institution, you confirm that you have read and agree to the Ri's event terms and conditions. Discourses are one of the Ri’s oldest and most prestigious series of talks. Since 1825, audiences in the theatre have witnessed countless mind-expanding moments, including the first public liquefaction of air by James Dewar, the announcement of the electron by J.J. Thomson and over 100 lectures by Michael Faraday. In more recent times, we have had Nobel laureates, Fields medal winners, scientists, authors and artists – all from the cutting-edge of their field. Discourses are an opportunity for the best and brightest to share their work with the world. Steeped in nearly two centuries of tradition, a Discourse is more than just a lecture. To keep the focus on the topic, presenters begin sharply at 7:30pm without introduction and we lock the speaker into a room ten minutes ahead of the start (legend has it that a speaker once tried to escape!) We also ask guests to dress smartly to add to the sense of occasion. Discourses are free for members – consider joining today. Find out more about the history of the Friday Evening Discourses on our blog. The dress code for this event is smart (ties optional, no jeans or trainers). Please note, if you are not dressed smartly you may be asked to sit in the gallery. Event image by TED Conference via Flickr

FutureLeague Spring Tournament

FutureLeague Spring Tournament
Event on 2017-04-22 13:00:00
Overview FutureLeague LEGO Robotics introduces kids, ages 9 to 14 (grades 4–8), to the fun and excitement of science and technology through year-round programs and competitions. This gives kids more more opportunities to continue developing their skills, in addition to other events they may be taking part in, such as FLL, WRO, or Robofest. FutureLeague is a San Francisco-based startup that teaches kids about coding and engineering through progressive, project-based courses. There will be three parts to the Spring Tournament: Robot Missions – based on FLL Fall 2016 challenge field kit Project Expo – projects based on FLL Fall 2016 challenge Critical Thinking Team Challenge Competition Robot Missions Kids will build, test, and program an autonomous robot using LEGO Mindstorms technology to solve a set of missions. Each mission has a different point value, so participants will have to make critical decisions about which ones to go after, taking into account the likelihood of success, time involved, and point values. Project Expo Teams will participate in an open exhibition to share their robot design strategy, as well as the innovative solution they developed for the Fall FLL competition. Each team will be given a set time to exhibit while a panel of judges goes around to each team to ask questions about their process. The purpose of this open event is to allow each team to show off their hard work, practice their presentation skills, and share their solutions with the rest of the community. This way, kids can get learn and get inspired by how other teams approached similar challenges in completely different ways. Critical Thinking Team Challenge The team challenge is a one hour engineering and design-thinking activity that will take place on-site during the day of the competition. It will not involve programming or any specific technical skills. Instead, the challenge will be a surprise so that participants can display their teamwork and critical thinking skills with little advanced preparation. Award Ceremony At the end of the event there will be a brief trophy presentation, followed by category-specific presentations to highlight teams that stood out in each of the three competition areas. Winners in each area will be given the opportunity to share their work in a non-judged, interview-style format, so that everyone can continue to learn from each other.
